New Jersey Passes "Ban the Box" Law
The ability of covered employers to inquire into and use criminal records in New Jersey has been restricted. New Jersey Governor Chris Christie signed "The Opportunity to Compete Act" on August 11, 2014, which will go into effect on March 1, 2015.
What Should Employers do when Background Screens Reveal Criminal Records?
Research from the Society for Human Resource Management shows that nine out of 10 employers run criminal background screens on applicants as part of the hiring process, and the number of Americans who turn out to have a criminal history has increased significantly in recent years to about 30% (92 million people).
According to the US Small Business Administration, for every dollar an employer invests in employment screening, the return on investment ranges from $5-16, resulting from improved productivity, reduced absenteeism, lower turnover – and decreased employer liability.
